Full Digital Refit: 2006 Cruisers Yachts 455 Express Gets a Complete Electronics, Power, and Autopilot Overhaul

This 2006 Cruisers Yachts 455 Express came to Hullux Marine Electrical for a full-scope modernization, touching nearly every electrical system on board — navigation, power, and helm control all got a clean-sheet upgrade.

The Showpiece: A Custom Dash Built for Three MFDs

The centerpiece of the project is a custom CNC-cut dash panel designed to house three Garmin GPSMAP units side by side — an 8610, an 8612, and an 8612xsv — giving the helm a wraparound wall of chartplotting, radar, and sonar capability. Fitting three large-format displays into the existing helm required precise panel fabrication to maintain a factory-integrated look while accommodating the new hardware. A Garmin GMR Fantom 24x dome radar, GPS 24xd antenna, and a full NMEA 2000 backbone tie the entire navigation suite together, while a Garmin AIS 800 transceiver, VHF 315 radio, and new AIS/VHF antenna round out communications.

Digitizing the Engine Room

One of the more technically demanding pieces of this project was the complete elimination of the boat’s analog engine gauges in favor of a fully digital data stream. An Actisense engine monitoring unit paired with dual Yacht Devices NMEA 2000 engine gateways translates all engine data into the NMEA 2000 network, feeding live engine parameters directly to the new Garmin MFDs. This required careful integration work to ensure every legacy analog signal was correctly mapped and displayed digitally, with no loss of critical engine information at the helm.

Power System: Lithium Conversion and Full Monitoring

The boat’s house bank was converted from AGM to lithium, with three Epoch 314ah lithium batteries replacing the original AGM setup, plus a dedicated dual-battery lithium bank added for the bow thruster. Charging is handled by dual Victron Orion XS DC-DC chargers off the existing alternators, along with a Victron MultiPlus 3000VA inverter/charger for AC power at the dock or underway. A Victron Cerbo GX and GX Touch 70 display provide full system monitoring, backed by Victron SmartShunts on both the house and engine/thruster banks for accurate real-time battery data. The Garmin and Victron ecosystems were fully integrated, so power system status is visible right alongside navigation data. The shore power connection was also upgraded to a 50A shore cord setup to support the increased electrical load.

Autopilot Retrofit

The vessel’s aging Raymarine autopilot was removed and replaced with a Garmin Reactor 40 mechanical autopilot system, built around the GHC 50 instrument. The retrofit included a new rudder feedback sensor and shadow drive sensor for accurate, responsive steering input, with the autopilot remote head repositioned to the helm and fully integrated into the Garmin network for seamless control from the primary MFDs.

Additional Upgrades

Rounding out the project, an aft deck floodlight with motion detector integration was added (with a video cable pre-run for a future wired camera), along with wireless engine room and backup cameras for added visibility around the vessel. A Starlink Mini was also installed and integrated into the boat’s 12V DC system for connectivity underway.

The Result

What began as a series of individual upgrades came together as a single, cohesive electrical and electronics system — a fully digital helm, a modern lithium power plant with remote monitoring, and a reliable, integrated autopilot, all working together on one unified network.
