Historic Tall Ship, Modern Systems: Bay Lady’s Electrical Refit

The Bay Lady, a historic tall ship based out of Seattle, needed her electrical systems brought up to contemporary standards without compromising the character of the vessel. What started as a DC panel replacement — necessitated by corroded wiring at the batteries — grew into a full electrical modernization.

At the heart of the refit is a new CZone digital switching system, replacing the old panel entirely. Multiple CZone Output Interfaces and a waterproof keypad now give the crew push-button control over the vessel’s operating modes — day sailing, night sailing, alongside — without navigating a wall of individual breakers. A battery combiner, emergency parallel switch, and house battery switch round out a cleaner, more resilient DC power architecture at the battery bank.

Shore power was another priority. The Bay Lady had been running extension cords down through the main hatch to power the boat while docked. A SmartPlug shore power system now handles that connection cleanly, paired with a Victron isolation transformer — essential on a steel-hulled vessel, where galvanic isolation protects against stray current corrosion in a marina environment.

For monitoring, a Victron SmartShunt was installed and integrated into the boat’s NMEA 2000 network via a Victron VE.Direct-to-NMEA 2000 gateway, putting real-time battery and system data directly on the helm’s MFD alongside the vessel’s other navigation instruments.

Taken together, the work preserves everything that makes the Bay Lady a piece of Seattle’s maritime history while giving her the electrical backbone of a modern vessel — safer, simpler to operate, and built to keep sailing for years to come.
