Heavy Iron: Battery Bank Overhaul and Solar Upgrade Aboard a 2007 Nordic 54
This 2007 Nordic 54 came in for a significant power system upgrade: doubling the house bank capacity, adding solar charging, and putting real-time monitoring in place to keep tabs on it all.
A Serious Battery Bank
The existing house bank was replaced and extended with sixteen Lifeline 6CT AGM batteries — 6 volts, 300 amp-hours each — mounted in eight GC2 battery boxes and wired together with heavy 4/0 tinned copper cable. Batteries of this size are no small task to install under any circumstances, and the lazarette on a boat like this one adds its own set of complications: tight access, awkward angles, and no easy way to muscle nearly 100 lbs per battery into place. Getting all sixteen batteries secured, wired, and properly torqued down in that space took patience and a fair amount of careful rigging.
The added battery weight was significant enough that the boat needed to be reballasted afterward to keep her trim and sitting correctly on her lines — a reminder that even a vessel the size of a Nordic 54 isn’t immune to the effects of adding several hundred pounds of lead-acid battery low in the hull.
Solar Charging
To keep the expanded bank topped off, six SunPower 170-watt flexible solar panels were installed and wired through a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/35 charge controller. The flexible panel format allowed the array to be mounted without the bulk of rigid framed panels, keeping the installation clean on deck. This phase of the project landed in August, right in the middle of a stretch of summer heatwaves — not exactly ideal conditions for spending long hours working on deck, but the timing meant the new solar system was put to the test almost immediately.
Monitoring and Connectivity
A Victron BMV-712 Smart battery monitor was added to give real-time visibility into state of charge, current draw, and overall battery health — critical with a bank this large. A mount and adapter for a Starlink antenna were also installed, laying the groundwork for satellite connectivity on board.
The Result
What started as a battery replacement grew into a full power system upgrade — more capacity, solar charging to support it, and the monitoring to keep it all in check. Despite the physical challenges of the install and a summer heatwave that didn’t make the job any easier, the Nordic 54 came away with a house bank built to handle serious time at anchor.
